Instinctive and Evasive Driver Training
Driving Courses

A comprehensive hard surface driving program designed for drivers to become more instinctive and reactionary in the processes associated with crash avoidance. This training will afford students the opportunity to expand their awareness beyond the confines of the vehicle.

Analytical studies of assaults on government and corporate personnel indicate that most incidents occur during times of travel in a motor vehicle. Critical Edge incorporates practical exercises to make students aware of their surroundings and become more instinctive in their driving habits. Some of the topics that are taught include: vehicle dynamics, high-speed driving, attack recognition and attack response, evasive maneuvers and attack scenarios.

The Instinctive and Evasive Driver Training Critical Edge offers can be accomplished in one day or over the course of several days. Our facility provides students a variety of vehicles that consist of sedans, SUVs, armored vehicles or a combination of vehicles that Critical Edge uses.

Instinctive Driver Training: Phase I

The course of instruction will begin in the classroom with the students receiving an informational brief about vehicle considerations and characteristics. In Training Phase I, students will learn the proper use of their eyes, vehicle dynamics, proper braking techniques for both conventional brakes (Non ABS) and ABS, proper steering techniques, weight transfer management and the use of drivable terrain. Upon completion of these drills, students will test what they have learned by performing skills in practical exercises. By applying all the lessons of becoming a more instinctive and reactionary driver, students will have to maneuver their vehicle safely to avoid an imminent roadway emergency.

Instinctive Driver Training: Phase II

This phase of training will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with close-proximity driving. While driving in rural areas may be relatively easy, driving in a city environment changes the dynamics for vehicle capabilities and the driver's attention. By using peripheral vision and getting familiar with driving within inches of other vehicles, students receive a better understanding of driving within close quarters.

Instinctive Driver Training: Phase III

Students will receive a brief classroom lecture before challenging themselves to drive at speeds above their comfort level, while maintaining control of the vehicle they are driving. This phase will give the students the experience of vehicle capabilities and characteristics at higher speeds. While driving at a high rate of speed, students will understand the method of applying balanced braking, right and left-hand turns, cornering techniques and whole road line-of-sight driving.

Evasive Driving Techniques

Evasive driving techniques can be dangerous, and evenly deadly, if not used appropriately or with a reason to act. Evasive driving techniques can be used if there is no other way to avoid, evade or escape an imminent threat. Students will learn and apply evasive driving techniques such as backing, ramming and surgical (PIT) maneuvers. Upon completion of evasive driving drills, students will demonstrate what they have learned by applying all techniques through scenario-based training.

Off-Road and Specialty Vehicle Driver Training

Students will learn not only the mechanics of the 4x4 drive train and mechanical operation, but traction demands, shift points and proper gear selection. Practical exercises include proper off-road braking, acceleration, obstacle avoidance, emergency reactions, recovery techniques and a challenging obstacle course. The culmination of training is an unknown terrain driving exercise that combines all elements of training.

Advanced Driver and Crash Avoidance Training (ADECA)

The Advanced Driver Training and Crash Avoidance course is designed specifically for young drivers to help them prepare for real-life experiences on the road. The course includes classroom instruction and hands-on practical exercises. Instructors will provide students with the knowledge to become a more instinctive driver by introducing a proactive skill set they can use behind the steering wheel. This course trains students to recognize all aspects of an emergent driving situation and execute safe, viable and realistic driving options to avoid or mitigate a crash Click here for more information.

Unimproved Road Course (URC)

This portion of the training will challenge students to operate their vehicle utilizing all of their senses - most importantly, their sight. Students will be challenged in a variety of traction environments such as sand, mud and gravel while utilizing specialized steering, braking and acceleration techniques. Students who complete the course will have a better understanding of the basic concepts and skills required to operate a vehicle at higher speeds during unimproved driving conditions.
